Summer roof maintenance tips

April 19, 2012 By admin

1

Your roof takes a lot of abuse from the elements in New Jersey, especially with summer’s scorching heat and sometimes never-ending rain. Therefore, you will need to have some basic knowledge of maintaining your roofs this summer. While obviously there are some jobs that only contractors can do, these are some of the basic maintenance tips for the summer that you can do yourself.

Number one – Clean your gutters

2

This one goes without saying. Gutters don’t just collect rainwater. They often times become clogged with leaves and branches, especially in New Jersey. If left alone, the debris will build up until the gutters are clogged and rainwater starts to accumulate underneath your shingles, shortening their lifespan.

Number two – Trim the trees

3

Trees are nice, especially if they can provide shade during the hot New Jersey summers. But at the same time, trees also pose a hazard to the house, especially roofs. Many times, trees can burrow straight through the attic space because it was growing at an angle to the house. What’s worse, squirrels and other pests living in trees will have a much quicker access to your house and roof. Animal damage is the worst damage that a roof can experience, and you can prevent that by trimming the trees.

Number three – Pest control

4

As mentioned above, animals can pose an added risk to your roof’s well-being and longevity. Many animals in New Jersey like to roost in attic spaces because of the regular temperature and security from the outside world. However, when they make their territory, they often times destroy parts of the structure, compromising the integrity of the roof. Doing regular sweeps in the attic space for animals like squirrels can definitely lengthen your roof’s life.

One last reminder

Remember, these are the steps that you can take to lengthen your roof’s lifespan. There are many other services that only a licensed roofing contractor can handle. If you find yourself faced with difficulties at any time when maintaining your roof this summer in New Jersey, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
